Autumn 1 - Traders and Raiders (Anglo-Saxons)
Who’s that waving axes and brandishing swords? It’s the Saxons invading Britain’s shores!
During this half term, we’ll start by making sturdy boats to sail the ocean’s fearsome waves. We’ll write reports as an onlooker who witnessed the Saxons’ landing, and we’ll find out about key dates. Using online maps, we’ll plot the location of Roman shore forts and draw our own sketch maps. We’ll make models of Saxon weaponry, homes and jewellery and carefully carve runes using clay tools. When we learn about the Legend of King Arthur, we’ll retell the story, and write character portraits about Alfred the Great. We’ll write poems praising King Olaf, making sure they are complimentary, and learn about the everyday lives of the Saxons and Vikings.
Autumn 2 - Stargazers (Space)
Journey through space – the final frontier! Let’s take a trip to the stars, planets and suns and discover the amazing wonders of the night sky.
During this half term, we’ll read information texts to find out about the Solar System and the Sun, using mnemonics
to help us remember the facts. We’ll make a Solar System and investigate the cycle of day into night. We’ll learn about Galileo, the ‘father’ of modern astronomy and his famous astronomical discoveries. Taking on the roles of the planets, we’ll use movement to demonstrate the motions of the planets and moons. We’ll investigate lunar myths and write astronaut poetry. Then we’ll make a space shuttle or satellite, testing the materials for durability, and we’ll program toys to explore a lunar landscape.
At the end of the project, we’ll look at alien-themed comics, invent our own aliens and consider the big question: why is there life on Earth? Finally, we’ll invite you to our ‘Visitors’ centre’ and share our knowledge with you.
Spring 1 - Flow (Rivers)
Get your wellies on and let’s wade right in!
This half term, we’ll visit a local river to find out what lives there, where the river is going and how fast it’s travelling. At the river, we’ll collect water and soil samples and catch river creatures. We’ll examine the samples at school to investigate how clean the water is. Using our creativity, we’ll write journals as river travellers and journey on an imaginary boat to rivers around the world. We’ll make working models of water wheels, investigate the water cycle and use natural materials to make models that demonstrate river formation. Our descriptive river poetry will capture the movement of water, and we’ll mix watercolours to create beautiful paintings in art. Our map reading and research skills will help us to find out about world famous rivers. In PE, we’ll play team games to ‘cross the river’ in the hall without falling in!
At the end of the project, we’ll create a newsflash to explain what we’ve learnt, build a bridge and sculpt messy mud rivers outdoors.
Spring 2 - Allotment (Plant life cycles)
Come on, let’s grow!
This half term, we’ll visit an allotment to see what’s growing and spot the greenhouses and frames that help the plants to grow. Our visit will inspire us to write a report about the allotment and investigate types of compost and biodegradable materials used. We’ll use food from the allotment to make delicious dishes, and plant our own fruits and vegetables. Our art skills will improve as we make detailed observational drawings, using botanical images for inspiration. We’ll write a
set of instructions explaining how to plant a tree and learn how to care for plants. The classic children’s book The Secret Garden will inspire us to write our own short stories. We’ll explore germination, learn more about the parts of the plant and find out how they reproduce. Maps will help us to identify the best place for an allotment and where different foods come from.
Once we’ve all got green fingers, we’ll write poems to celebrate the wonder of the garden. We’ll look at how well our plants have grown and make structures to support them. Attending our gardening masterclass will also help you to learn how to grow plants too!
Summer 1 - Hola Mexico (Ancient Mayans)
With the Chihuahuan Desert as our imagined location, we’ll write postcards and clear instructions for a game. We’ll read Maya myths and legends, and write our own. Using maps, we’ll locate Mexico and explore its natural features. We’ll discover what daily life is like and how it has changed over time. Then we’ll craft Maya chocolate and simple woodwind instruments from recycled materials. Who can make the highest, loudest and longest sounds?
At the end of the project, we’ll listen to Maya music and learn a traditional song. We’ll also perform Mexican music from the past and present.
Summer 2 - Hola Mexico (Mexico's Geography)
Bienvenido a Mexico! We’re going to explore this unique country, from its towering temples to its fun-packed festivals.
During this half term, we’ll watch a traditional Mexican performance and join in with percussion instruments. To cool down afterwards, we’ll have a refreshing drink of sangrita or limeade. We’ll use non-fiction books to find out about the importance of music in Mexican culture and have a go at folk dancing. Using our literacy skills, we’ll write about festivals and create an invitation to a Mexican food tasting session. In preparation, we’ll make delicious drinks and savoury dishes. We’ll learn about the ‘Day of the Dead’ and create 3-D skulls.
