Rights for Respecting Schools

Norfolk is Rights Respecting!

UNICEF is the world’s leading organisation working for children and their rights. In 1989, governments worldwide promised all children the same rights by adopting the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC). These rights are based on what a child needs to survive, grow, participate and fulfil their potential.  These are rights that all children have. They cannot be taken away and it is adults who have the responsibility to ensure their rights are met.

Rights Respecting School

We are a UNICEF Rights Aware School. We have achieved the Silver Award for the UNICEF Rights Respecting School Award. We are currently going for GOLD!

What is a Rights Respecting School?

A Rights Respecting School:

  • Puts the UNCRC at the centre of school life
  • Teaches children about their rights and the responsibilities that come with them
  • Builds confidence, respect, self‑belief and compassion
  • Encourages pupil participation in decision‑making
  • Promotes equality, fairness and global citizenship

This aligns directly with our school values and our Big Ideas, providing a golden thread through everything we do.

Since 2022, we have been working alongside UNICEF to become a Rights Respecting School. We have made good progress towards embedding children’s rights in the school’s policy, practice and ethos, as outlined in the RRSA Strands and Outcomes. This ties in with the work we are doing on our Big Ideas and efforts to de-colonise our curriculum.

All children are taught about their rights across the curriculum. Rights are the focus each week during assemblies and are discussed in detail as part of our curriculum.  Every year each class makes a class charter. This charter is agreed and signed by the children and adults. It details how we will show respect for each other's rights.  We have a steering group where children, teachers and governors come together to discuss our Rights. We have a group of ambassadors who work with children across all year groups to ensure children can enjoy their rights throughout the school day. We are continuing to work with the children to teach them about global issues and have held various events across the year to help in such issues.
