Learning French at Norfolk

We believe that learning a new language is a magical adventure. It doesn't just teach children new words—it opens their eyes to different cultures, builds their self-confidence, and helps them grow into kind, connected global citizens.

Our chosen language is French, which we teach weekly to all children in Key Stage 2 (Years 3 to 6). To make our lessons as exciting and successful as possible, we use a wonderful, interactive program called Language Angels.

The 3 Steps of Our French Journey

We know that learning a language takes time and practice. We break our French curriculum down into three gentle steps so every child can learn at their own pace:

  1. 🌱 Getting Started (Year 3):

    • The Focus: Fun, sounds, and building confidence!

    • What we do: We play games, sing songs, and learn basic words like greetings, numbers, and colors. Children spend most of their time listening and speaking so they feel happy and relaxed.

  2. 🌿 Growing Confident (Years 4 and 5):

    • The Focus: Putting words together.

    • What we do: Children start building their own sentences. They learn how to share their opinions, use adjectives to describe things, and learn why words in French have different "genders" (masculine and feminine).

  3. 🌳 Ready for High Stage 3 (Year 6):

    • The Focus: Expressing our own ideas.

    • What we do: Children become much more independent. They learn to read longer stories, write their own short paragraphs from memory, and hold conversations with their classmates. This sets them up perfectly for secondary school!

What Do French Lessons Look Like?

If you walk into a French lesson at Norfolk, you will see a room full of energy! We make sure lessons are active and stress-free by using:

  • Real French Voices: We use audio clips of native French speakers so the children hear perfect pronunciation.

  • Games & Songs: We use interactive whiteboard games, music, and physical actions to help new words stick in the mind.

  • Friendly Partner Chat: To make sure nobody feels shy, we practice speaking all together as a class first, then with a partner, before anyone tries speaking on their own.

  • Color Magic: We use clever color codes (like pink and blue) to help children easily spot patterns in the language.

How French Connects to Our "Big Ideas"

We don't just learn French words; we use French to explore the world around us. We connect our language learning to our school's six Big Ideas:

  • 🕊️ Peace & Freedom: We learn that language is a tool to make friends. By learning how to introduce ourselves (Je me présente), we discover how to welcome others.

  • 🌍 Sustainability & Environment: We talk about our planet. Children learn the French words for different wild environments (Les habitats), discussing how we can look after nature together.

  • ⚖️ Equity & Social Justice: We explore La Francophonie—the millions of people who speak French in different countries all over the world, exploring how we are all connected.

  • 🤝 Diversity & Identity: We compare our daily lives with families in France and other French-speaking places, celebrating what makes our heritages unique and special.

  • 🗳️ Participation & Citizenship: We practice taking turns, listening politely to our partners during speaking activities, and voting on class favorite sports and hobbies in French.

  • 🍎 Health & Wellbeing: We learn how to name healthy foods (La nourriture saine) and practice speaking about our feelings and physical health.

French is for Every Child!

At Norfolk, we want every child to love learning French. We make sure our lessons are fully inclusive:

  • We break learning down into tiny, bite-sized steps.

  • We use lots of pictures, signs, and actions so children don't have to rely only on reading.

  • If a child finds writing tricky, they can show us what they know by speaking, drawing, or matching picture cards.

  • We pair children up supportively so they can help each other.

How We Celebrate Success

We want our children to feel proud of their progress without any pressure. We measure how they are doing in gentle, supportive ways:

  • Fun Warm-ups: Every lesson starts with a quick game to help children remember what they learned last week.

  • "I Can" Sheets: At the end of a topic, children fill out friendly "I can do..." sheets to celebrate their own successes.

  • Low-Stakes Quizzes: We use interactive games to see how children's listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills are growing over time.

Our Goal: We want every child to leave Norfolk Community Primary School saying: "I can speak French, I love exploring different cultures, and I am excited to keep learning!"
