How Our Navigators Link to the Big Ideas

The Big Ideas provide the conceptual structure of our curriculum:
Peace & Freedom, Sustainability & Environment, Equality & Social Justice, Diversity & Identity, Participation & Citizenship, Health & Wellbeing.

Every half term, the Big Idea is paired with specific Navigators attitudes:

Peace & Freedom (Autumn 1)

  • Pupils practise being reflective and knowledgeable as they learn about conflict, cooperation and children's rights.
(e.g., assemblies on freedom of speech – Article 13; peace-building; conflict resolution.)

Sustainability & Environment (Autumn 2)

  • Pupils act as excited and curious learners when exploring environmental protection, climate change and habitats.
(Geography and science content on sustainability, pollution, habitats.)

Equality & Social Justice (Spring 1)

  • Children develop resilience, inspiration and reflection as they learn about fairness, prejudice, influential figures and human rights.
(Historical enquiries: MLK, Harriet Tubman, the Industrial Revolution.)

Diversity & Identity (Spring 2)

  • Pupils demonstrate curiosity, articulacy and knowledge as they explore culture, heritage, religion, families and identity.
(Assemblies on inclusion, diversity, Article 29; geography and RSHE enquiry questions.)

Participation & Citizenship (Summer 1)

  • Pupils develop ambition, knowledge and inspiration, becoming active citizens who contribute positively to their community.
(Learning about influential individuals, democracy, belonging.)

Health & Wellbeing (Summer 2)

  • Pupils show reflection, ambition and resilience as they learn about health, safety, emotional wellbeing and personal growth.
(Linked through RSHE, science and PE.)

This structure ensures children apply their Navigator attitudes to real‑world knowledge and concepts, giving them meaningful practice in social responsibility, reasoning, empathy and problem-solving.
