How Geography Links to Our Big Ideas
Our geography learning is directly anchored to our six Big Ideas, which act as conceptual threads to build deep vocabulary and understanding across all year groups.
- 🕊️ Peace & Freedom: Children explore how geographical features can lead to conflict or cooperation between different places. In Year 5, this is looked at through the distribution of natural resources like water and the global impact of water pollution.
- ⚖️ Equity & Social Justice: We look at how people around the world are connected through trade. In Year 4, pupils investigate global trade links, analyzing the differences between fair trade and unfair resource distribution. In Year 5, children explore the social divides of rich and poor areas in Brazil.
- 🤝 Diversity & Identity: Geography helps children celebrate diverse cultures and communities. Our students contrast their lives in Sheffield with urban and rural life in China (Year 2), historical landmarks in Greece (Year 4), and the unique traditions of the indigenous people of Brazil (Year 5).
- 🗳️ Participation & Citizenship: Children learn how global choices affect local environments. In Year 4, this is woven into discussions surrounding the advantages and disadvantages of renewable versus non-renewable energy sources.
- 🌍 Sustainability & Environment: This core thread teaches children how human behavior changes the earth. In Year 6, pupils study the world's six major biomes and climate zones, critically evaluating the ways in which human activity is damaging these vital vegetation belts.
- 🍎 Health & Wellbeing: Our curriculum connects physical geography to human survival. In Year 3, children explore "hazardous Earth" concepts like volcanoes, earthquakes, and tsunamis, discovering how extreme natural events directly impact the safety, housing, and wellbeing of societies.
