Vocabulary, Oracy & Mathematical Talk

High‑quality vocabulary instruction is central to our curriculum.

Frayer Model Vocabulary Teaching

Each lesson begins with explicit teaching of key mathematical vocabulary using a Frayer Model, helping pupils understand:

  • Definitions
  • Key features
  • Examples and non‑examples
  • Visual representations

This routine supports learners with SEND, those with language barriers, and pupils who need more structured language support.

Sentence Stems & Stem Sentences

We use sentence stems to scaffold reasoning, explanation and mathematical thinking. Examples include:

  • “I know this because…”
  • “This is similar to ___ because…”
  • “The pattern I can see is…”
  • “I used the representation to show…”

These are used during partner talk, whole‑class discussions, and written reasoning.
