Our six "Big Ideas" act as conceptual ‘golden threads’. They help our pupils—including those with SEND and those facing disadvantage—access complex themes through repeated exposure and shared vocabulary.
Our Big Ideas act as "golden threads" throughout our science topics:
Sustainability & Environment: This theme helps children learn how human behavior impacts the planet. In Year 1, children observe weather and seasonal changes. By Years 2, 4, and 5, they study Living Things and Their Habitats, life cycles, and environmental responsibility.
Health & Wellbeing: Children learn to make informed choices about physical health and hygiene. This is taught through the "Animals, including Humans" strand in all year groups, covering everything from basic body parts in Year 1 to the circulatory system and nutrients in Year 6.
Diversity & Identity: We use science to explore what makes people unique and challenge stereotypes. This is highlighted in Year 6 through Evolution and Inheritance, and in Year 1 as children identify human body parts.
Equity & Social Justice: This theme focuses on fairness and access to resources. In Year 5, children explore the properties and changes of materials, while Years 4 and 6 look at Electricity and its impact on how we live.
Participation & Citizenship: Pupils learn how society works and how they can be active citizens. This is linked to our Electricity and States of Matter units in Year 4, as well as our focus on scientific enquiry across the school.
Peace & Freedom: We explore cooperation and fairness. In Years 3 and 5, children study Forces and Magnets, while Years 3 and 6 explore Light—fundamental concepts that govern how we interact and share information in the world.
