Explaining Each Big Idea

Explaining Each Big Idea

Peace & Freedom

This theme helps children explore conflict, cooperation and fairness—from playground disagreements to global events. Pupils learn strategies for managing conflict, understand the consequences of war, and explore how people work towards peace.
This supports emotional literacy, behaviour regulation and restorative practice—all essential in our high‑need context.

Equity & Social Justice

Children learn about fairness, equality, discrimination, access to resources and the impact of power. The theme includes understanding prejudice, racism and poverty, and developing the motivation to take action for a fairer world.
This directly supports our civic, rights‑based approach and builds moral reasoning and critical thinking.

Sustainability & Environment

Children learn how human behaviour impacts the planet and explore climate change, resource use and environmental responsibility. This Big Idea promotes global awareness and empowers children to make positive choices for the future.

Diversity & Identity

Pupils learn about different cultures, religions, traditions and identities, exploring what makes people unique. They build positive attitudes towards difference, challenge stereotypes and develop confidence in their own identity.
This strengthens community cohesion in a rapidly changing local context.

Participation & Citizenship

This theme teaches pupils how society works, the importance of rules, democracy, and how they can be active citizens within their school, local area and beyond. Pupils explore leadership, the role of government and how collective action leads to change.
This directly supports our rights‑respecting commitments.

Health & Wellbeing

Children learn to make informed choices about physical and mental health, personal safety, hygiene, relationships and emotional regulation. The theme promotes lifelong healthy habits and builds resilience.
